Reasons for the appearance
An inguinal hernia is a disease associated with prolapse or protrusion of the abdominal organs in the groin area. In this case, a hernial sac is formed, which most often contains intestinal loops or part of the greater omentum. There are two main reasons for the formation of this defect: congenital changes in the structure of the inguinal canal and increased intra-abdominal pressure.
Common risk factors for the development of pathology, regardless of age and gender:
Chronic severe cough.
Pathology of the gastrointestinal tract associated with an increase in intra-abdominal pressure (more often, this is an increase in the size of organs and tumors).
How is an inguinal hernia diagnosed?
The diagnosis is straightforward. Usually, a survey and examination is sufficient to detect a hernia. In some cases, ultrasound of the abdominal cavity, pelvic organs, scrotum and irrigoscopy are prescribed, but they are needed not to detect a hernia, but to determine the organs that are in the hernial sac.
The presence of an inguinal hernia, regardless of its type (oblique or straight), is an indication for surgical treatment. It is impossible to get rid of it in a conservative way. Conservative treatment - wearing a bandage, can be prescribed only temporarily if the patient has contraindications to the removal of an inguinal hernia. After its elimination, the treatment is carried out in a planned manner. A strangulated inguinal hernia requires immediate surgery, as it threatens with serious consequences, and delay worsens the prognosis of the disease.
Direct and oblique inguinal hernias are associated with changes in the posterior wall of the inguinal canal, so the purpose of the operation is to strengthen it. Treatment is carried out under local or general anesthesia (for large hernias). The operation, depending on the indications and size of the formation, can be carried out in an open way (incision in the inguinal canal) or endoscopically (using punctures).
The methods of surgical intervention for hernias are divided into 3 types:
