Trigeminal neuralgia is a chronic disease characterized by compression, irritation or inflammation of the trigeminal nerve. Trigeminal neuralgia is defined by the international Association for the study of pain as a syndrome manifested by sudden, short-term, intense, repetitive pain in the innervation zone of one or more branches of the trigeminal nerve, usually on one side of the face.

Cause of disease

* diseases of the paranasal sinuses;
malocclusion;
* vascular aneurysms;
* herpes, which affects the ganglia of the trigeminal nerve;
* hypothermia, injuries, shocks, consequences of concussions;
• compression of the trigeminal nerve by a tortuous blood vessels or tumor;
* multiple sclerosis; (especially in adolescents)
meningitis;
* viral infection, cold, bacterial infection of the throat and upper respiratory tract.

Symptoms of trigeminal neuralgia

This disease is characteristic of older people and is more common in women than in men after 40 years. Thus there is a strong shooting pain which is unilateral in nature, very rarely on two sides of the face. The attack lasts from 3-4 to 15-20 seconds, in severe cases up to 2 minutes. During the day maybe up to 30 - 40 painful paroxysms. Over time, the localization of pain is unchanged, if it is characteristic of one side, then it is there and present.
Pain is usually "trigger", ie irritation zones (touch, cough, talking, chewing).
In addition, the pain of neuralgia is divided into typical and atypical. Typical pain is characterized by periods of subsidence, the pain can be shooting. Atypical pain is constant, it can capture a large section of the face at the same time she does not stop.

Treatment

The basis of treatment consists of several groups of antiepileptic drugs, the use of which depends on the type of neuralgia and the duration of the disease. When drug therapy is ineffective, surgical methods are used, as well as intraosseous blockade or stereotactic radiosurgery.
