Diagnosis and treatment of the anal canal polyp

Diagnosis and treatment of the anal canal polyp

Anal polyp - benign neoplasms in the lumen of the anal canal or rectum, which consist of epithelial cells or connective tissue, are called anal polyps. They are localized on the mucous membrane lining the intestine from the inside.
At the beginning of the disease, polyps do not cause any discomfort to the patient and do not have any characteristic symptoms. This is why they are dangerous - in 8 out of 10 cases, the disease can be reborn and provoke the development of rectal cancer. Therefore, all over the world, coloproctologists consider this diagnosis as a precancerous condition, which must certainly be detected in a timely manner.

 In most cases, the disease is asymptomatic. Symptoms begin to appear with a large size of the anal polyp. Among them:
- blood and mucous discharge from the anus;
- black stool: indicates the presence of blood;
- pain in the anus and abdomen;
- indigestion: constipation, diarrhea;
- anal itching.

Blood, pain, and indigestion can be symptoms of other illnesses as well. Therefore, it is important to consult a coloproctologist in a timely manner and diagnose the problem.

Diagnosis of polyps of the anus and colon

The complex of diagnostic measures includes:
- digital examination by a coloproctologist;
- sigmoidoscopy, anoscopy;
- laboratory blood tests.

Treatment
Anal polyps must be removed to prevent their growth, complications and malignant transformation. The removed polyp is necessarily sent for histological examination to establish its origin and exclude rectal cancer. The operation can be performed both on an outpatient basis and in a hospital. Anesthesia - epidural or intravenous anesthesia. Recovery after surgery takes 1-2 weeks, depending on the size of the polyp. During this period, it is recommended to follow a sparing diet, avoid physical exertion, overheating and straining. After removal of the polyp, it is necessary to visit the proctologist regularly to exclude the recurrence of the disease.
