Diagnostics and treatment of varicose vessels of the lower extremities

Varicose veins of the lower extremities or varicose veins of the lower extremities - expansion of superficial veins, accompanied by valve failure and impaired blood flow.

This is the most common peripheral vascular disease. According to epidemiological data, various forms of this disease are found in 26-28% of women and 10-20% of men of working age.

Diagnostics
Currently, the main available methods for diagnosing varicose veins are:

- Doppler ultrasound. The most common method for the primary diagnosis of diseases of the veins of the lower extremities is today Doppler ultrasound (DUS). This method is based on the Doppler effect, which consists in the fact that ultrasonic waves, passing through tissues, are reflected from moving blood cells and change their frequency at the same time. Highly sensitive sensors, recording these changes, reproduce them with a special apparatus (Doppler) in the form of sound signals resembling wind noise, or a graphical curve.

- Duplex (two-dimensional) angioscanning allows you to register an image of a venous vessel in real time on the monitor screen with a Doppler assessment of blood flow in it. Triplex (three-dimensional) angioscanning, in addition to the above, allows you to obtain a color image of the blood flow.

- Phlebography. Phlebography is a radiopaque examination of veins, which for many years was, and in some cases remains, a decisive diagnostic method for examining patients with venous diseases and, mainly, in the case of their complications.

Treatment of varicose veins

A successful solution to the problem of treating varicose veins consists of the consistent implementation of the following tasks:

- Elimination of varicose syndrome;

- Elimination of signs of CVI;

- Prevention of disease progression and recurrence.

Methods for treating varicose veins:

- Compression therapy;

- Conservative therapy;

- Surgical treatment (phlebectomy);

- Sclerotherapy.

First of all, they try to treat varicose veins with conservative methods. Strictly speaking, this is not a treatment for varicose veins. All conservative methods in the "treatment of varicose veins" are aimed, first of all, at the prevention of the disease and its complications. Also, conservative methods are the only possible therapy if the patient has serious contraindications to other methods of treatment or if the patient refuses surgical treatment of varicose veins. Radical elimination of varicose syndrome is possible only by surgery, at the same time, the functional result of treatment is of great importance, which implies the elimination or minimization of the manifestations of CVI.

Treatment of varicose veins should be complex and individual, most often including conservative and surgical treatment. A phlebologist can only recommend a method of treating varicose veins, based on his experience, but the decision is always yours.
