Treatment and diagnosis of antiphospholipid syndrome

Treatment and diagnosis of antiphospholipid syndrome

Treatment and diagnosis of antiphospholipid syndrome

Causes of the disease

Unfortunately, modern medicine has not yet been able to establish the reason why the immune system “fails” and begins to produce special proteins (antibodies) to certain tissues of the body, as a result of which its own healthy cells and tissues are damaged. Antiphospholipid bodies include: lupus anticoagulant and anticardiolipin antibodies. These types of antibodies can be found in a number of diseases, as well as against the background of certain medications. Therefore, only a professional doctor can correctly diagnose antiphospholipid syndrome and prescribe the necessary treatment.

APS diagnostics

The diagnosis of "antiphospholipid syndrome" is made in the presence of two clinical manifestations:

- the presence of arterial or venous thrombosis

- loss of pregnancy due to severe toxicosis of the second half of pregnancy.

To confirm the diagnosis, a blood test is done to detect antiphospholipid antibodies and the number of platelets in the peripheral blood is determined. The diagnosis of "primary APS" is made if the patient does not have systemic autoimmune (or some other) diseases. In the case of such diseases, we are already talking about “secondary APS”.

APS treatment

When antiphospholipid antibodies are detected and APS is diagnosed, a woman should take pregnancy planning seriously and strictly follow the recommendations of obstetrician-gynecologists and hemostasiologists. Such women are prescribed direct anticoagulants in early pregnancy. Sometimes their reception continues until childbirth. If there were no miscarriages and thrombosis before, then the appointment of low doses of aspirin is sufficient.

Throughout pregnancy, careful regular monitoring is necessary: ‚Äč‚Äčultrasound examination of the fetus, monitoring of blood clotting, analysis of immunological parameters. Taking indirect anticoagulants during pregnancy is contraindicated. However, already during lactation, their intake is not prohibited.
