Allergic rhinitis treatment

Allergic rhinitis (hay fever) is inflammation of the nasal mucosa caused by allergens. It was first described by John Bostock in 1819. This English physician suggested that the cause of the disease was somehow related to hay, since the symptoms of the disease appeared when the patient was in contact with it.

Causes of allergic rhinitis

What exactly causes allergic rhinitis was established by another English doctor, David Blackley, 54 years after the description of the disease. He proved that the cause is the pollen of some plants. The list of such plants includes trees (poplar, alder, maple, etc.), cereals (oats, barley, wheat, etc.), weeds (wormwood, ragweed, etc.), mushrooms (their spores are an allergen). It also turned out that ordinary house dust can also cause this disease. Moreover, in some patients, an allergic reaction occurs to several types of pollen or house dust.

Not all people suffer from allergic rhinitis. Doctors note a genetic predisposition to this disease. Other factors (poor environmental conditions, removal of tonsils) only provoke attacks, but are not the cause. In genetically predisposed people, allergies can occur to almost any substance.

Allergic rhinitis treatment

Therapy for allergic rhinitis is based on two main principles:

1. Termination of contact with the allergen.

2. The use of drugs that block the development of an allergic reaction. To stop contact of the allergen with the mucous membrane, the nasal cavity is washed with special solutions (saline, Aqua Maris, etc.)

The use of correctly selected drugs gives a quick and long-lasting effect. Medicines that are used in this case are divided into several groups:

1. Local vasoconstrictor drugs. These are solutions for instillation into the nose (naphthyzin, galazolin, sanorin, etc.). These medicines are used for first aid, since they relieve swelling of the mucous membrane and restore nasal breathing in a few seconds. However, their effect is short-lived.

2. Antihistamines. These substances block the action of free histamine, which triggers an immediate reaction. They act more slowly than the vasoconstrictor agents, but more prolonged.

Local glucocorticosteroid drugs. They are used if the drugs of the two previous groups are not effective enough.
The choice of drugs and the course of treatment is determined by the allergist, who will select the most effective treatment regimen for each patient.
