False contractions begin in the third trimester. They may feel like a general tightening of the uterus, as if it is contracting into a ball, or as if the baby is turning over inside your abdomen. Usually, false contractions are painless and almost always last no more than 1 hour. Although all women experience false contractions, not all women experience them, especially during their first pregnancy. So you don't have to worry if you don't feel them.
Signs of preterm labor to be aware of
- spasms above the pubic bone, similar to menstruation;
- pressure or pain in the pelvis, thighs or groin;
- dull pain in the lower back or a feeling of pressure in the back;
- spasms in the intestines or diarrhea;
- increasing vaginal discharge;
- watery fluid, pink or brownish discharge, or blood from the vagina.
If you experience any of these symptoms, or experience more than four contractions in an hour, call your doctor right away. You may be asked to come in for an examination or to measure the time of contractions. You can feel contractions (constriction and relaxation of the uterus) if you lightly touch your abdomen with your fingertips.
How to stop preterm labor
If you have a preterm labor, your doctor will tell you how to stop it. He will probably suggest bed rest.
If contractions continue, you may be hospitalized so that the doctor can monitor your condition.
How to prevent preterm labor
Here are some tips to help prevent the onset of preterm labor.
If you are thirsty, drink a glass of water every two hours to avoid dehydration, which can make your uterus more sensitive. If you are not thirsty, then you should not force yourself to drink water. In the presence of edema, the drinking regimen is limited.
Eat right to gain 11.5-16 kilograms during pregnancy.
Always wipe from front to back after going to the toilet to prevent infection.
Rest every hour or so while sitting with your legs elevated. Don't lift weights.
If you're doing manual labor and you're having contractions that won't go away, stop and rest.
Try to avoid stress.
Preterm labor is a daunting prospect, but most women experience only false contractions, which are completely harmless.
